Mom To Mom ~ Question Of The Week
Submitted by Shelley Cassar, Patriot Mom
When teaching at home, my children are always asking if it is time for their "break" yet. I know they need them, but also see that they can stop the momentum of getting the work done. Instead of doing the breaks so randomly I am going to try making them more a part of the routine. So my question to all you Mom's is:
On your days teaching at home, how do you handle "breaks" for your children? Do you let them take a break every 1/2 hour, hour, after a subject is completed? What works best for your children?

We take breaks at 10, 12 for lunch, and 2. If the weather permits, they go out and jump on the trampoline, or do something active that takes a lot of energy, so they come back ready to work.
We take breaks every 1 to 1 1/2 hours and I break her work up based on what we can accomplish during that time. That way she knows what she has to accomplish during that time and is motivated to finish. I try also to organize the time into independent work and aided work in case I have a few things that need to be accomplished like blogging!
We do our most work intensive subjects first. Generally break for a snack at 10:00 and then lunch at noonish. Hoping that most work is completed by then. I check work and explain problems after Gabe goes down for nap. When the weather gets nice..sometimes we take a longer morning break and take a walk.
